Activity: Identify initial sounds
Learning to identify sounds in words is a crucial part of children’s knowledge that will enable them to blend sounds together for later reading practices, and it helps them to learn how to segment words for later spelling exercises.
In this activity, the KG3 students worked in groups to identify initial sounds in words. They wrote and drew shapes of animals and objects that begin with the initial sound provided.
The children enjoyed the activity a lot and it helped them learn to work in a group, and more importantly, they understood the importance of sounds and how they can inform us about the world around us!
The students are now able to identify initial sounds and come up with words that begin with the same sounds. Working together always makes learning more fun!
